Where’s Bartleby?

At Bartleby.com, of course. This has to be one of my favorite sites on the web--for several reasons. First, it’s the online home for the American Heritage Dictionary, the dictionary for any one seriously interested in the English language, especially as it’s used in the United States. (Yes, of course there’s the OED...but that’s a subscription service--the American Heritage Dictionary’s free at Bartleby.com.) There are a lot of other reference works available here, along with a huge amount of poetry and prose classics. So it’s pretty much a one-stop shopping site for me.

Here’s what I do once I’ve reached Bartleby’s. I take three of the words from one of Karlheinz Essl’s Lexicon-Oracles and search all of Bartleby.com for any reference to those words. So, for example, the first installment of “without sinking into the dead-end street of rien ne va plus” was built on these three words: composing, discussions, and original. For composing, I found this:
...A small shallow tray, usually metal and with an adjustable end, in which type is set by hand. Also called job stick.... ...A room where typesetting is done.... ...A composing stick is a hand instrument into which a compositor places the letters to be set up. Each row or line of letters is pushed home and held in place by a... Composing a concert is like composing a menu. If you start with light pieces and play a 45-minute sonata after the... Composing a piece of music is very feminine. It is sensitive, emotional, contemplative. By comparison, doing housework is positively masculine.... Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. Slowly you see more details of the house--the color of... The composing room has an unlimited supply of periods available to terminate short, simple sentences. ...Compositors. The stick is the printer’s "composing stick," which he holds in his left hand while with his right hand he fills it with letters from his "case." It... ...French paintings; the many ethnic groups that compose our nation. See Usage Note at comprise. 2. To make or create by putting together parts or elements. 3. To create...

I did the same for discussions and original. In the end, I came up with roughly 575 to start building a poem/text with. What’s great about Bartleby’s is that these words come from all over the place--the American Heritage Dictionary, Roget’s Thesauri, Barlett’s Familiar Quotations, the Harvard Classics & Shelf of Fiction, poets from Burns to Yeats. Enough words to generate something with the potential for creating meaning in the reader’s mind. But getting the text is only the first step. I’ll tell you what happens next in another entry.
